FLOWERS FOR UKRAINE

Since the Russian war in Ukraine began in February, Silk Laundry started actively looking to support Ukrainians through our in-boutique flower markets. From Brisbane to Montreal, proceeds from every flower sold support Ukrainian charities; Masha Foundation and VET Crew. We are pleased to share that $40,000 AUD have been raised to support the cause.

“For me, the best part of my role is the values I have instilled in my business. I am happy to tell stories that are important to me. It has given me a special voice, and Silk Laundry now allows me to donate to causes in need and do charity work. To me, that is the best part of my role.” - Founder, Katie Kolodinski.

“We have been able to purchase land and begin Project 166, which is now an official charity and a carbon sequestration project. I have donated over $40,000 to Ukraine for aid directly through our flower sales. My worlds of fashion and conservation are colliding - it’s allowing me to love what I do.”

PROJECT 166

Project 166 was sparked by Creative Director Katie Kolodinski and CEO Reece Rackley’s purchase of a 1,200-acre plot of land that was destroyed by traditional farming and logging. The not-for-profit organisation aims to regenerate the land by planting 166 trees on behalf of every person in the business from the date of purchase. Thus, 166,000 planted trees became the goal. In 2022 we have successfully planted 3,890 trees; created a shared shed upgrade; placed bee hives on the land and introduced two new camps in June and September. As one of Project 166’s founding entities, we're pleased to participate in the development of the inaugural crops and the Project’s foundations.

Katie and Reece envision the garden as a vibrant hub where people can learn about the importance of pollinators, participate in planting activities, and enjoy the beauty of native plants. The transformation of this historic space underscores our commitment to revitalising local communities and promoting ecological.

PUBLIC GARDEN

Silk Laundry’s very own Creator Director Katie Kolodinski and CEO Reece Rackley have set out to create a community space and pollinator garden in Katie’s hometown of Thunder Bay, Canada. The space is housed in the facade of an old bank building with the intention of being transformed into a free space for all to experience.

This garden will serve as a sanctuary for local flora and fauna, fostering biodiversity and offering a serene environment for community members.

ART PRIZE

As a way of uniting the Silk Laundry community and celebrating creativity, in April 2022 we launched the inaugural Art Prize photography competition. Our first competition attracted alluring imagery under the theme Flowers in Focus. In 2023 we marvelled at the detailed and enchanting imagery of critters in line with the brief Nature’s Laboratory. Now an annual event with a new theme to be announced each year, we are thrilled to provide a platform that commends artistic expression and craftsmanship.

This year, we are excited to launch our 2024 photography prize with the theme based around "HUMANITY." Entries will open in July - subscribe to our newsletter to be the first to know.
